What is known about cats and cat breeds?
Cats are one of the most popular pets around the world, and their origins can be traced back thousands of years.
The domestication of cats is believed to have begun in the Near East, specifically in the Fertile Crescent region, around 10,000 years ago. However, the precise origin of cats is still a topic of debate among researchers and historians.
One theory suggests that cats were first domesticated by ancient Egyptians, who worshipped them as gods and kept them as pets to control pests such as rodents. Another theory proposes that cats were domesticated independently in several regions around the world, including China and Mesopotamia.
Regardless of their origins, cats have become an integral part of human society, providing companionship, pest control, and even therapeutic benefits.
Today, there are over 500 million domestic cats worldwide, and they continue to captivate and enchant their human companions with their playful personalities and mysterious nature.
Cat Breeds Origin Assumptions
Cats come in a variety of breeds, each with its own distinct physical and personality traits. While the origins of many cat breeds are not entirely clear, some breeds have well-documented histories.
Siamese cats, for example, are believed to have originated in Thailand (formerly known as Siam), where they were kept as royal pets. These sleek and elegant cats were highly valued and were often given as gifts to visiting dignitaries. In the late 1800s, Siamese cats were imported to England and the United States, where they quickly gained popularity as pets.
Persian cats, on the other hand, have a much more mysterious origin. Some researchers believe that Persian cats were first bred in Persia (now Iran) over 2,000 years ago, while others suggest that they originated in Turkey.
These long-haired, gentle cats were prized for their luxurious coats and were kept as pets by Persian nobles and aristocrats.
Other popular cat breeds, such as the Maine Coon and the American Shorthair, are believed to have originated in the United States.
The Maine Coon, a large and sturdy cat with a thick coat, is thought to have evolved from domestic cats and the wild lynx population in Maine. Meanwhile, the American Shorthair was developed from cats brought over by early European settlers and was used as a working cat on farms and ships.
In recent years, new cat breeds have been developed through selective breeding and genetic manipulation.
While some of these breeds, such as the Sphynx and the Scottish Fold, have gained popularity, there is an ongoing debate among animal welfare advocates about the ethics of breeding cats for physical traits that can cause health problems.

We bring you an interactive map of cat breeds with their pictures and brief descriptions. On the map you can find the name of the breed alphabetically – just click on the icon on the map or in the right menu.
However, it is worth mentioning some nuances, as we determined the country of origin:
- in most cases, the country of origin is the country where the breed was bred. Sometimes the country is different from the breed’s historical homeland.
- quite often it is not possible to determine the true origin of the breed – so, again, the country of origin is the place of their breeding.
- In controversial cases (if more than one country is considered the place of origin), we took the one listed first.
- The main source of data is Wikipedia – hopefully the information there is more or less objective.

We tried to make the map as easy to use as possible. But just in case, here are the main points.
