Tabby and Dixie were the first known cats to grace the White House residence.
It is said that the 16th President (Abraham Lincoln) fed his beloved Tabby with a golden fork at White House dinners.
He also claimed that his other cat Dixie was smarter than his entire cabinet. And First Lady Mary Todd mentioned that cats were her husband’s only hobby.
Murmeo comment! President Lincoln famously said, “Dixie is smarter than my whole cabinet”. By “cabinet” he meant the entire government.
Lincoln’s friend, Caleb Carman, recalled the president taking one of the cats and “talking to it for an hour and a half.” The cats clearly won the president over with their intelligence.
Lincoln was particularly fond of stray cats and was known to bring them home on occasion. Mrs. Lincoln nicknamed the cats “my husband’s hobby.”
And here are the two cats themselves: Tabby and Dixie.

Maฤak, Nikola Tesla’s childhood muse

In a 1939 letter to a 12-year-old boy, Nikola Tesla wrote how his childhood pet, a black cat named Machak, had left him with a lifelong fascination with electricity.
Here’s what was in that letter:
ยซAt dusk, as I stroked Machak’s back, I saw a miracle that left me speechless with amazement. Machak’s back became a streak of light, and my hand produced a stream of crackling sparks loud enough to be heard throughout the houseโฆ I cannot exaggerate the effect of that marvelous night on my childhood imagination. Day after day I asked myself, what is electricity?ยป

Hemingway’s love affair with six-toed cats began that day: he collected polydactyls at his Key West home.
Descendants of Snowball, the original six-toed friend of the feline family, even today roam Hemingway’s Key West estate, numbering about 50 cats.
And even now, if a cat has a different number of fingers than usual, it may be called a Hemingway cat.

Meet another legendary cat in world history, whose name was Oscar “Unsinkable Sam” (Oscar “Unsinkable Sam”).

The first was the German battleship Bismarck, sunk by the British in May. One of the crew took the cat on board before sending it to sea.
Members of the British Royal Navy destroyer HMS Cossack found him floating on a board, adopted him, and named him Oscar. HMS Cossack and was the second ship that sank in October 1941 with the cat.
Finally, Oscar was picked up by the British aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal, which was torpedoed in November 1941.

Maybe that was the reason for their longevity.

Tama, Japan’s legendary stationmaster

Tama the cat gained fame as stationmaster of Kishi Station in Wakayama, Japan.
In 2007, the railroad gave her the title of stationmaster, whose main duty was to greet passengers.

Incidentally, her unique headgear was specially designed and made to her size.
Research estimates that the publicity around Tama contributed about 1.1 billion yen (nearly $9 million) to the local economy. She passed away in 2015.
Cat Stubbs, the mayor of Talkeetna, Alaska

Stubbs was chosen as mayor by those voters who opposed human candidates.

He also went to a nearby restaurant every day and drank catnip water from a shot glass or margarita. Stubbs passed away in 2017.
